Hot air balloon crash in Florida pond full of alligators. A hot air balloon pilot is being hailed a hero for keeping his cool and even cracking a bit of a joke Monday during an emergency landing in a pond full of alligators in Florida which was caught on tape by one of the balloon's passengers. Pilot Russ Lucas made the unexpected landing into the pond not too far from Disney World. Lucas is heard on the video telling his passengers as he guided the massive balloon to the water 'we're gonna get a little bit wet, sorry about that'. A local station caught a shot of alligators peering out from the water in the pond where the balloon landed. As the balloon lands, you can hear the passengers excited and a couple claps. The hot air balloon run by Orlando Balloon Rides landed in gator infested water Monday.

As the balloon lands in the water a passenger starts screaming (left), the balloon's basket quickly takes on water (right) One of the passengers jokes once they land in the water seemingly safely: 'You pay extra for the water landing guys.' But screams from the crashed aircraft soon follow. The scene quickly turns frightening again when the basket turns over and water starts rushing in from the pond. A woman is heard screaming in the background as the water fills the basket. Thankfully the alligators that were in the pond didn't get involved in the incident. Of the 1. 6 people on board, one boy was rushed to the hospital after swallowing water but amazingly nobody else was hurt. The pilot told troopers that issues with the wind prevented him from landing on a strip adjacent to the pond, investigators said. A passenger gets ready to swim it as the basket touches down in the pond Monday A crew spent about an hour removing the hot air balloon from the pond, which contained multiple alligators, WFTV reported.
Pilot Russ Lucas and 1. Orlando Balloon Rides, authorities said.'The pilot had to make an emergency landing (because of an issue with the wind),' FHP spokeswoman Kim Montes said. He attempted to land in a field off the Turnpike, but ended up in a retention pond.''It was scary.
It was really scary,' one passenger recounted. A lot of people were screaming. My girlfriend went underneath it, so I just had to throw my phone away and get her safe. Her dad took care of the little boy.'Video recorded by a passenger shows the balloon landing on the water and drifting toward the bank. The basket then overturned, sending screaming and crying passengers into the pond. Most of the deflated balloon ended up draped across the grass near the southbound lanes of S.
R. 4. 29. All lanes of S. R. 4. 29 are open. Orlando Balloon Rides will remove the balloon, the FHP said. The company, Orlando Balloon Rides released a statement about the accident: 'The balloon pilot, with sixteen passengers on board, was preparing for a routine landing near State Road 4. Orange County. A change of wind direction at ground level just before touchdown meant the pilot was forced to make a quick decision – risk contact with powerlines, or land the balloon in a nearby retention pond.'The basket with all seventeen on board splashed down and stayed upright until drifting near a bank, when it tipped over. One seven- year- old boy ingested some water in the evacuation, so the decision to call an ambulance was made out of an abundance of caution. The boy was treated and released at the scene.'All sixteen passengers are injury free. The only damage is to some personal affects, such as clothing and cellular phones.
Slow and steady. The pilot was able to navigate to the still water below without much rocking. As the hot air balloon lands in the water, ripples form.
Thankfully there were no serious injuries'Orlando Balloon Rides owner Keith Fear says, 'I'm absolutely thrilled our pilot had the skills and the training necessary to make that decision. Our pilot, Russ Lucas, has over 2,0. What happened today is certainly not a routine situation, but he did what he needed to do to avoid something far worse and make sure everyone stayed safe.'''We're both relieved and sad for our passengers. We're relieved they are ok, but we know this has not been the fantastic experience we were looking for. We're committed to making things right with them.'''While we understand this is unusual and may even be scary, we think our pilot absolutely made the right decision.''The incident has been reported to both the FAA and the NTSB.
Orlando Balloon Rides has pledged their full cooperation with any investigation.'.
