Gregor's full frontal approach to women in every sense begins to look less amorous than pathological when the story suddenly goes into flashback showing him picking up a pert young girl (Emily Mortimer) and shacking up with her in an Edinburgh attic to become a writer.

His frustrated inspiration at the keyboard is displaced on to the hapless girl, whom he assaults with the contents of a bowl of custard followed by a bottle of ketchup, and anoints with a bag of sugar or salt. But then the author of the book on which it is based, Alexander Trocchi, who died a heroin addict, was once tipped to be the Scottish William Burroughs, and the film conveys his malignant view of life pretty accurately.

Mc. Gregor deserves great credit for not adding charm to his character's callous emptiness. But whether his performance will harm his romantic magnetism, only the box office will prove.
